1.1 REQUIREMENT/ PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO PH.D

A. Eligibility:

For Ph.D.

Minimum nineteen years of studies (LLM or its equivalent qualification) with at least second Division in the relevant filed recognized by HEC Pakistan.

B. Admission Procedure:

M.Phil. and M.Phil. leading to PhD.

  1. LLM or equivalent qualification in the relevant field from a recognized University.

  2. The Admission will be granted on the basis of Test/ Interview by Department Research Committee of the concerned Department/ Centre/ Institute for admission in Ph.D. Program Distribution of Interview marks are given in Annexure-II.

  3. The candidate is required to appear in the Entrance Test conducted by the relevant Department/Centre/Institute of SZABUL Karachi.

  4. The candidate shall submit the following documents along with the Entrance Test Application

    3. Photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card. iii. Two Passport Size Photographs.

    4. Photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card. iii. Two Passport Size Photographs.

  5. There will be 20 percent weightage for NTS score, if valid, and the candidate will be exempted from appearing in section 1 (English + Communication skills) of the SZABUL Entrance. However, the candidate will have to clear section II (Subject knowledge and application of 80 % marks).

    1. The test shall comprise of the following sections: Section-I English+ Communication Skills20% Section-II Subject Knowledge and Application 80%

    2. The candidate will be required to score at least 40% marks in section I and 50% marks in section II separately to become eligible for consideration for provisional admission.

    3. Qualifying the admission test is no guarantee to admission.

C. Provisional Admission:

  1. Application for provisional admission will be considered on the basis of eligibility, merit, availability of seats and supervisors.

  2. Up to 20% admission will be given to candidates having completed their last degree from institutions other than Universities situated in Karachi.

  3. Final admission list will be prepared by the Departmental Research Committee.
    (DRC) according to the following formula:

  1. 80% weightage will be for the mark obtained in the last basic degree.

  2. 20% weightage will be for the marks obtained in the interview in the interview by the Department Research Committee of the concerned Department/Center/Institute. Distribution of Interview marks are given in Annex-I.

D. Submission of Forms for Provisional Admission:

Selected candidates for provisional admission are required to submit the following along with the duly filled admission form endorsed by the Chairperson/ Director of the Department/ Institute/ Centre and the concerned Dean:

i.    Two recent passport size Photographs duly attested by the Chairperson/ Director of the Department/ Institute/ Centers concerned.
ii.    Attested Photocopies of certificates/degrees from SSC to Masters or the last Pre-requisite exam.
iii.   Degree holders of other Universities are required to submit Migration Certificate. iv. An attested photocopy of computerized National Identity Card.
v.    N.O.C. and two years leave letter from the employer, if the candidate is in service or a certificate of non-employment stating that during research no employment shall be undertaken, executed on a stamp paper worth Rs.20/- (attested by Notary Public/Oath Commissioner) However, Teachers and Employees of organizations where research work is done are exempted from leave.
vi.    In case of foreign students, N.O.C. from the Ministry of Education, Government of
Pakistan, Islamabad and an attested copy of valid visa and passport.
vii.    Certificate from the Equivalence Committee, SZABUL, in case the accreditation status of the degrees is not clear. viii.    The admission & tuition fee.

E. Course Work:

i.    All selected candidates will be required to complete six courses of 18credit hours in two semesters.
ii.    In each semester there will be three courses of 3 credit hours each.
iii.   Candidates are required to attend at least 75% classes of each course. iv.    The student has to pass the course work with CGPA 3:00 or more. In case the student fails to get the desired CGPA, he/she will be allowed to improve the grade. Only one chance for improvement of each course studied will be given in the subsequent year.
v.   If the student fails to improve his/her grade even after the improvement chance he/she will be relieved from PhD Program.

F. Confirmation of Admission:

i.    After passing the course work with CGPA 3.0 or more, the student will be required to apply through proper channel for confirmation of admission and approval of research title. ii.    The student will submit a synopsis along with research topic, bibliography, name of the Research Supervisor and a copy of the marks certificate issued by the Semester Examination Section duly forwarded by the supervisor, Chairperson & Concerned Dean.

G. Duration of Study:

A Ph.D. degree normally takes three years to complete. An extension may be available upon request by the relevant candidate, and the maximum period of study is five years from the date of admission. In case of extension, an extension fee as determined by the program shall apply.

H. Evaluation& Award of Ph.D Degree:

The thesis will be evaluated by two external examiners and the supervisor appointed by the BASR. The Ph.D degree will be awarded after receipt of positive reports from the examiners, supervisor, successful oral defense of the thesis and approval by the BASR.

I. Evaluation and Award of Ph.D. Degree:

i.    All those candidates who have been enrolled in Ph.D. program after January 10, 2010 must have published at least one research paper from his / her Ph.D. thesis in HEC recognized “X” or “W” category journal. However, before this cutoff date “Y” category journal is also acceptable for awarding Ph.D. degree. ii.    Evaluation of Ph.D. thesis by two technologically / Academically advanced countries + one local evaluator is mandatory. iii.    The Ph.D. degree will be awarded after the receipt of positive reports from the examiners, supervisor and successful oral defense of the thesis and approval by the BASR.

J. APPOINTMENT OF SUPERVISOR:

Faculty members of SZABUL/ BASR approved supervisors holding Ph.D. degree will be appointed as Supervisors of Ph.D. candidates.

Ph.D. in Law

Each candidate will have to qualify both sections of SZABUL Entrance Test consisting of the following:-

    1. Section-I

      1. General English

      2. Essay

    2. Section-II

      1. Jurisprudence

      2. Islamic Jurisprudence

      3. Interpretation of Statutes

  1. The candidates securing 60% marks in each section shall be considered eligible to appear before the interview committee along with proposed research project, synopsis duly prepared in consultation with a qualified supervisor.

  2. Final merit list of the candidates will be prepared based on the following criteria. a) Academic Achievements 20%

b) SZABUL Entrance Test 60%(based on score on Entrance Test)
c) Interview/ viva Voce 20%(based on marks obtained in interview)

In principle, ORIC facilitates the management of the intellectual assets which mainly stem from faculty research and converts them into mind-blowing technologies giving benefits to the society. There is the significant importance of academia and industry linkages for innovation and experiential educational model development. In this context, ORIC facilitates the establishing of collaborations between industry and academic researchers (faculty). Specifically, ORIC may have the following roles and responsibilities:

  • Development of research and technology

  • Commercialization of technology
